The beginning of PowerScout Sports goes back almost 30 years…
The initial statistical basis for the PowerScout Hockey system was born in the early 80′s during the creation of the board game National Pro Hockey developed by Terry Appleby.
It was two particular events two decades later though that catapulted Terry’s research to focus on one core objective:
Which player statistics are actually significant in helping explain why their team wins hockey games?
First, it was a timely column in the Edmonton Journal dated October 10, 1998 written by sports journalist Mark Spector that offered a light-hearted forecast of the forthcoming season for the Edmonton Oilers.
Most pre-season forecasts up to that point, and still to this day, only refer to team improvements in terms of rank in the conference, but his measurement was unique. It quantified the improvement in terms of games, or points in the standings, that the team was better as a result of the changes the team had made in the off season. Read Mark Spector’s article here
Coupled with the introduction in 1997 of the real-time scoring statistics like hits and actual player ice time, later to be following by giveaways and takeaways in 1998, and blocked shots in 2002, all the right statistics were finally being collected to determine each player’s true impact on team wins.
It was ultimately these two events that shifted the focus of Terry’s primary research, which after 13 years of in-depth research into all aspects of hockey, has now been perfected to become the PowerScout Hockey system that you can now enjoy every day in real-time on this website.
